3 Simple Techniques to Sharpen Your Focus

Your attention can be trained. Try this simple routine when your mind feels scattered or you need to concentrate.

1. Reset with your breath

Take 3 slow, controlled breaths through your nose. Allow each exhale to be relaxed and slightly longer. This can help settle your nervous system and bring your attention back to the present.

2. Train your attention for 1 minute

Choose one object or image and observe it closely for 60 seconds. Notice its colours, shapes, details and textures. Keep your attention on it, but blink normally. Each time your thoughts wander, gently return your attention to what you are observing.

3. Give your mind a brief reset

After around 15 minutes of concentrated work, close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Breathe naturally and focus only on the sensation of your breathing. When your attention wanders, return to your breath.

Practised regularly, exercises like these can help you develop better attention, awareness and mental discipline.

The mind becomes better at what you repeatedly ask it to practise.
